“Seeing the Unseen” is the theme exhibit theme at this Refuge. Split Rock Studios provided final design and fabrication of exhibits for the new visitor center.
Islands of realistic dioramas depict the Refuge’s unique mangrove and uplands habitats, and help visitors learn to see the animals and plants that make up these ecosystems. An exhibit modeled after the studio of famed editorial cartoonist Ding Darling introduces visitors to the Refuge’s namesake and his important contributions to wildlife preservation and conservation. A room of hands-on exhibits includes a Build-A-Bird puzzle and an etched-glass rubbing table where visitors can make rubbings of Ding Darling cartoons and illustrations of Sanibel wildlife.
