The Nature Realm is the main visitor facility for 13 parks in Akron, OH. In 2009, MetroParks renovated the 15-year-old earth-sheltered building and interior exhibits. New exhibits highlight “How Nature is Good For You” through a series of models, hands-on activities and interpretive experiences.
A four-panel interpretive mural shows how the Park landscape changed over thousands of years. We sculpted an interactive tree that encourages visitors to explore all the ways we depend on nature, and features models of animals that are changed seasonally. Interpretive panels and demonstrations encourage visitors to be green, and highlight local “Earth Heroes.”
All the graphics and casework are designed so park staff can update information easily. Exhibit materials and lighting were selected to meet the green goals for the building, and we even reused elements from a large underwater diorama that was a visitor favorite from the previous exhibits.
