Ice House Museum Nears Completion

Excitement is building as the Ice House Museum in Cedar Falls, Iowa, nears completion. The WCF Courier published a story about the renovations and new exhibits. It also features interviews with historical society president Don Redfern, Ice House chairman Sid Morris, and board member Carolyn Hamrock.

Closed since 2008 because of flood damage, Split Rock Studios designed and built sculptures, interactive exhibits, and casework for the new museum. They will be installed this spring.

The Field Museum “Ancient Americas”

Split Rock Studios created two beautiful hand painted murals, casework, and rockwork for “The Ancient Americas” exhibition at the Field Museum.

Stretching 62 feet long, a high-detail hand painted mural depicts a Southwestern village bustling with life. A second mural shows an Incan town with people and animals walking along a winding mountain road. Both murals provide an engaging backdrop for the display of archaeological objects and information.

Split Rock Studios also constructed a 14-foot tall replica of a Tairona Wall; built to the exact specifications of the curators and exhibit developers at the Field Museum.

George & Eleanor McGovern Center for Public Service

The George & Eleanor McGovern Center at Dakota Wesleyan University opened to great fanfare in 2006. The center celebrates the life of the honorable liberal senator, from his humble rural roots to his legacy of leadership and hope. Split Rock Studios worked directly with George and Eleanor to tell the story as accurately as possible.

At a glance the visitors can see that this is not a typical museum exhibit. Theatrical lighting and geometric shapes fill the space, and seven video monitors with compelling and dramatic movies tell the McGovern’s story. Visitors can walk through themed environments and view collections of treasured memorabilia from the life and career of George McGovern.

Redwood Shores Community Library

Split Rock Studios created exhibits for a new library along the shore of San Francisco Bay. The exhibits celebrate life in the bay and help visitors discover things they cannot see with the naked eye.

The centerpiece exhibit is a mud column that houses a large aquarium, media interactives and many supersized touchable sculptures. A “Spin Browser” lets visitors scan time-lapse video to see how birds depend on the tides and mudflat. Outside, visitors can experience the motion of flight by running their hands along a contoured flight railing.

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics

Working closely with the Dole Institute Director, Richard Norton Smith, Split Rock Studios created exhibits to chronicle the accomplishments of Senator Robert Dole from his boyhood in Russell, Kansas, through the decades of service to his country.

Twenty-one exhibit cases radiate from two large stained glass windows designed by Split Rock Studios – one of which is the largest stained glass American flag in the world.  Five video programs interpret key experiences in Dole’s life, including a stunning multi-screen video of how the legislative process works shown beneath a large-scale replica of the Capitol dome in Washington D.C. Exhibits also include a Memorial Wall honoring Kansas WWII veterans and a three-dimensional marquee of Russell’s Dream Movie Theater – a place often frequented by the young Bob Dole.  Also on display are two columns retrieved from the World Trade Center and Dole’s uniform and medals from WWII.

Pancho Villa State Park

On March of 1916, soldiers led by General Pancho Villa attacked the military camp at the sleepy border town of Columbus, New Mexico. Historical exhibits at the Pancho Villa State Park tell the story of the only armed raid on the continental United States since 1812. A hand-painted mural sets the stage for a themed display of the parks Expedition-era vehicle collection, including a replica Jenny airplane, that fill the exhibit hall. Exhibits encourage visitors to travel back in time and imagine the challenges of military life in the desert.
