Split Rock Studios worked with the Gunflint Trail Historical Society to turn the old Chik-Wauk Lodge into a museum and visitor center that highlights the cultural and natural history of the Gunflint Trail and provides information about local lodges and recreational opportunities.
A large diorama depicts the boreal forest, surrounded by interactive and tactile exhibits. A dry aquarium diorama shows local fish and plant species in their underwater environment. Audio/visual areas highlight local history, famous residents, and the numerous lodges in the area.
Cases throughout the museum create settings to display artifacts from the area’s mining and cultural heritage. Interactives include a fur bale interactive that allows visitors to experience the weight the voyageurs carried with them on their journeys.
