Living History

Urbandale, Iowa

Exhibit Size: 5,000 square feet
Services Performed: Exhibit Design, Fabrication, Sculpture/Groundforms, Casework, Graphics, and Installation

One of the stories of the 20th century is the hybridization of corn, which increased yields from 30 to 300 or more bushels per acre. The effects this had on agriculture, daily farm living, and on the nation as a whole are the central themes in the new exhibits at Living History Farms. Split Rock filled the exhibits with engaging interactives to allow the visitor to experience these changes, and thus better understand them.

Visitors get the chance to peer into the lives of farm families of the 1950s and today. They can open cabinets, drawers and refrigerators to compare first-hand a kitchen then and now. Visitors also can listen to the stories of individual farmers who, via video monitors, tell how they decided to switch to planting hybrid corn, why the decision was so hard, and the difference it made in their lives.

A one-row corn picker and mural highlight the change from horse-drawn farm work to mechanization. Revolving photos of the same farm over a span of 70 years give the visitor immediate, visual understanding of how farm buildings have changed—from large barns to metal corn bins, for instance. Two Internet stations housed in a modified grain bin link visitors to web sites where they can learn more about the latest agricultural technologies.
