In the 1950s the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a working model of the San Francisco Bay watershed to test water quality issues. Housed in a 3-acre building, the model is now a fascinating visitor attraction.
A tour of the visitor center includes a walkway, now lined with spectacular 12-foot high murals depicting the San Francisco watershed from the High Sierras through Californias Central Valley and on to the Delta and Bay. The exhibits also incorporate interactive water drops, a working slide rule, salinity wheels, and a lighted topographical map. There is even a model of the model in which visitors can change channel depths.
