The showpiece of the new Elk Foundation complex in Missoula
is the Elk Country Visitor Center, a rustic, lodge-themed shrine to wildness,
with exhibits designed by Split Rock Studios to entertain and educate
a broad audience of visiting hunters, conservationists, tourists and travelers.
Using high- and low-tech hands-on exhibits that appeal
to all ages, the center introduces visitors to different elk habitats,
and demonstrates how elk, and all creatures of the northern Rockies, including
humans, need a variety of habitats to survive.
From the Discovering Elk Diorama with its 12 foot high,
47 foot long hand-painted panorama, to the touchable (and sniffable) replicated
natural objects, from the computer interactives to the recreated hunting
cabin, the exhibits demonstrate the contributions made by hunter-conservationists
to habitat and wildlife protection world-wide.
