The new visitor center at Bull Shoals Dam tells the story of the White River and its impact on the area. Drawing on both the collections and recollections of generations of residents, the exhibit highlights the rivers role as resource, transportation and most recently, recreation.
Upon entering the center, visitors are greeted with the sight of an original johnboat, pulled from the depths of the White River. Two large aquariums contrast the habitats and varieties of fish found in both the river and the dam. The underside of a boat and a large bronze mobile of fish hang from the ceiling directly above, giving the impression of being underwater.
Split Rock Studios created a realistic diorama to give a glimpse of how both the native people and early settlers lived off the land and water. Visitors can explore touchable sculptures of record-size fish and an interactive history of the dam. A theater designed to look like a dock, complete with recreated johnboat seating, plays a film in which locals tell tales of growing up around and fishing in the White River.
