The Richard I. Bong World War II Heritage Center honors the memory of Major Bong and all the men and women of World War II who contributed to winning the peace, using recreated environments, interactive videos, hand-painted murals, and two surround sound video theater presentations.
Dick Bongs famous P-38 fighter Marge, parked beside a reproduction Quonset hut in a Pacific Island scene, forms the central exhibit. Beginning with an introductory film, the museum takes visitors through the story of Americas involvement in WWII from pre-war life in America and the European theater, to Pearl Harbor, to homefront activities, and more. Large cases display the museums collection of World War II artifacts. Colorful hand-painted thematic murals create the backdrop for interpretive materials. Interactive AV exhibits trace the history of World War II, effects of the war on local families, and Richard Bongs heroic service and untimely death. Stories of survivors are recounted in an oral history audio exhibit.
