Richard I. Bong World War II Heritage Center

Superior, WI

Using recreated environments, interactive videos, hand-painted murals, and two surround sound theater presentations, the Richard I. Bong World War II Heritage center honors all the men and women of World War II who contributed to winning the peace.

The center is named for America’s all-time Ace of Aces, Richard I. Bong. His famous P-38 fighter “Marge,” parked beside a reproduction Quonset hut, forms the central exhibit. Beginning with an introductory film, the museum takes visitors through the story of America’s involvement in WWII. Large cases display the museum’s collection of artifacts and hand-painted thematic murals create the backdrop for interpretive materials. Interactive AV exhibits discuss the history of the war, the effect on local families, Richard Bong’s heroic service, and recounts the stories of survivors through oral histories.

Two videos, “Pearl Harbor” and “P-38 in the Pacific,” received 2003 Telly Awards.
